Thomas W. Hutchison received his Ph.D. in Marketing/Mass Communication from Florida State University. His expertise is in the areas of entertainment marketing, consumer behavior, Internet marketing and market research. Hutchison teaches in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University where he is the coordinator of the music business internship program.

Hutchison also teaches COM 312, The Business of Music at The New England School of Communications in Bangor, Maine.

Hutchison has conducted research on artists for Sony, RCA, MCA/Universal and Giant/WB Records, Geffen Records, DreamWorks, Warner Music Group, MCA, RCA and Polydor including Faith Hill, Toby Keith,Travis Tritt, The Dixie Chicks, Ricochet, Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Sons of the Desert, Gillian Welsh, White Zombie, Sonic Youth, Rufus Wainwright, Beck...and more.  Hutchison has also implemented marketing projects for record labels RCA, EMI Christian, Columbia, Epic, Pioneer, Magnatone, Virgin, Sparrow, Compass, Mercury, Provident, Compendia, Universal...and more.

Hutchison has written and edited a textbook on Record Label Marketing with colleagues Amy Macy and Paul Allen, published by Focal Press in 2006.  He has just released a book titled Web Marketing for the Music Business, also through Focal Press.  Previously, Hutchison was a contributing author to CyberMarketing: Your Interactive Marketing Consultant (1997) and Interactive Marketing: The Future Present (1996).

Hutchison is a veteran musician/bass player and has performed onstage with John Kurzweg (producer of Creed), The Allman Brothers, The Drifters, Billy Dean, Ray Charles...and more. He was a member of The 8 of Us, The Tallahassee Band, The Rainbow Band, Hutch n' Hoss and Hutch & Brand. He has also performed with former students Erin Enderlin and the Karg Brothers.
