  1. What is the view from Heron Cove?

The view from Heron Cove is lovely: tall pines and birches, private sand and gravel beach, quiet blue ocean water, sailboats, and the mainland shore.  At sunset, this eastern shore reflects glorious red and gold light as the sun descends behind Heron Cove. From our beach, guests experience a breathtaking view of the mountains of Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island.

  1. Is Heron Cove on the beach/ocean?

Heron Cove is located 80 feet from the shore of Union Bay, which separates Newbury Neck from the mainland and Acadia National Park.  It sits on quiet, protected, deep seawater—perfect for swimming and boating. Heron Cove is nestled in the woods with a very private sand and gravel beach that offers miles of excellent beachcombing and walking.

Heron Cove is on a deep ocean bay.  The bay directly in front of our private beach accommodates the largest sailboats (most of our neighbors have them), as well as power boats in crystal-clear waters that reach a depth of 37 feet.  Although we don’t have a mooring at present, we plan to add one in future so guests may bring their boats to Heron Cove.

"We LOVED the shoreline in the back.  Found lots of creatures by the water’s edge.”   - 08/26/2006

Tip:  When renting a coastal house in Maine, be sure to ask if it is located on tidal water, which means that mudflats are exposed at low tide, preventing swimming and launching a boat from shore. Heron Cove is on deep ocean water, which means swimming and boating is always possible, even at the lowest tide.

  1. Is the oceanfront safe/accessible for swimming, fishing, and launching small boats?

Yes, Heron Cove’s waters are safe for swimming and fishing and guests may launch small boats and kayaks from the beach.  Although some coastal Maine houses have cliff top views of crashing surf, it is impossible to swim or launch boats due to high waves, steep tides, undertow, and rip currents.  Heron Cove is extremely rare, with safe, protected, deep saltwater where you may swim and launch boats from the beach.  The beach is also perfect for taking long strolls.

  1. Is the area around HC quiet or busy?

Heron Cove defines peace and serenity. It is tucked down a long driveway, amid hushed woods on a private beach, away from the heavy traffic and congestion of the main road to Mt. Desert Island.  It is completely removed from noise, traffic, etc. The only things you see on the beach are herons and cormorants, with sailboats and the occasional seal in our crystal-clear ocean water.

  1. Is Heron Cove convenient for picking up groceries, near medical care, etc.?

Heron Cove is close to the town of Ellsworth, which offers Wal-Mart, chain grocery stores, restaurants, L.L.Bean, etc.  Even closer is the postcard-perfect village of Blue Hill—a popular vacation and retirement destination boasting a yacht club, cultural events, fine dining, and upscale shops alongside grocery and health food stores. Blue Hill and Ellsworth have hospitals, and Bangor (45 minutes away) offers the Eastern Maine Medical Center .

  1. Are there things to do other than visit Acadia National Park ?

Yes!  Guests could enjoy a week or more just on the Blue Hill Peninsula!  Nearby is the historic town of Castine, which has been continuously occupied since 1612.  Castine offers world-class sailing, a history museum, and sea captains’ mansions dating to the 1700s.  The town of Brooklin is home to the internationally famous Wooden Boat School, which offers classes in sailing, navigation, and boat building.  Eggemoggin Reach, which separates the peninsula from Deer Isle, is a renowned sailing spot—and one of the most beautiful places in the world.  Deer Isle boasts the world-famous Haystack Mountain School of Crafts as well as villages with quaint shops, art galleries, and antiquing.  Deer Isle’s most famous village is Stonington —a working harbor gateway to Isle au Haut and the thousands of small islands surrounding it (a kayakers dream!).  Isle au Haut is home to part of Acadia National Park and is accessible by ferry or private boat.  Cape Rosier offers a nature preserve with excellent birdwatching, and Blue Hill boasts a rare reversing falls popular with kayakers.  Throughout the area are delightful restaurants, art galleries, and antiques and crafts shops.  In Bar Harbor, guests may join whale watching tours and windjammer and deep sea fishing excursions, or simply savor the many shops and restaurants.  Guests also may take the “Cat” ferry across the Gulf of Maine to Nova Scotia —a day’s adventure during summer.

  1. What is the best time of year to visit the area?

Each season at Heron Cove brings its own special joys, and Heron Cove may be rented at any time of year.  Winter is beautiful, peaceful, and snowy, and guests may skate on nearby ponds, cross-country ski in Acadia National Park, go snowmobiling, or curl up by our gas fireplace with a good book or movie (Heron Cove is fully winterized, with radiant heat under its wood and slate floors).  Spring is changeable—sometimes as warm as summer, other times foggy and cool, but always a good time to get to know the local residents.  Also, watching the leaves and flowers arrive is a miracle on the Maine coast!  June, July, and August are ideal, with temperatures in the 70s and the widest range of activities.  For Mainers, fall is the best season of all:  warm days, cool nights, cobalt skies, blazing foliage, and no crowds!
